Chapter Ten

Jade woke into darkness, not sure where she was at first.

Then registered the arm slung across her stomach, the body beside her.

Remembered.

And shivered.

Smiled. Wow. Double wow.

She swiveled her head toward him. Studied his face, enjoying the luxury of the time to do so without fear of being caught.

And barely resisted a sigh. He had a savage beauty that was all male, bold and powerful, even relaxed in slumber. His guard was dropped, exposing a vulnerability she imagined few had ever seen.

Then he stirred.

She held very still, realizing that she wasn’t ready to confront what had passed between them.

Passed, hell. Detonated was more like it.

When Alex rolled to his side, away from her, Jade exhaled in relief. Her experience with the opposite sex wasn’t that extensive. She’d been too focused on her goals to engage in serious relationships. She’d had sex, sure, but her life was her job, and that was all she needed for now.

At least, that was what she’d believed.

Until tonight.

Until…Alex.

She still reverberated with after-impressions of his mouth, his hands, the sheer power of him, so dark and…sumptuous. Lavish. As rich and ripe as his paintings.

She couldn’t lie there any longer, this close to him. Her fingers itched to dive into his flesh, explore that amazing body again. See if what she recalled was for real or only imagination.

Her gaze trailed down the muscled planes of his back, and she considered rousing him from sleep in a manner that he’d probably enjoy. A lot.

And she might like too much. She wasn’t prepared to find out that the deeper sense she’d had—one that went far beyond physical pleasure and into realms she’d thought the province of romance novels—could happen again with him.

Nope, not nearly ready for that.

So she slipped from his bed in the darkness, careful not to wake him. She gathered clothing—not sure how much was hers or his—and tiptoed from the bedroom.

In the hall, she sought out the bathroom, then closed the door carefully before turning on a light.

Only to discover that she’d retrieved his jeans and her torn tank top. In the mirror, though, she caught sight of a robe hanging on a hook behind her.

She donned it and was immediately surrounded by a spicy, mysterious scent she couldn’t describe but only knew as Alex’s. Swathed in fabric that had last touched his flesh, enveloped by the smell of him, Jade had to repress another shiver.

A delicious, treacherous one.

She flipped off the light and readied herself to return to his room to search for her jeans and shoes. As she crept down the hall, a spill of light from his studio beckoned.

When her hand touched the door frame, she halted, remembering his reaction when she’d followed him before. He was an intensely private man. She wondered if anyone else knew about this surprising talent of his.

His family, surely. The man who’d spoken of them with such love would paint for them, not hide it. But had Doc seen his work? His fellow agents?

Somehow she thought not,
